At College Composed,

we understand that applying to college is simultaneously terrifying and exhilarating. After working with scores of students over the years—and going through the college process recently with our own children—we’ve gained a healthy perspective on the whole process. Our mission is help you minimize the terrifying and maximize the exhilarating.

Here’s what we do in a nutshell:

  • Collaborate with you to develop a college list where every school is one you’d be happy to attend

  • Devise a work plan with reasonable deadlines so you can pace yourself

  • Guide you through writing essays that reflect your authentic self and engage your reader

  • Remind you, in your less-than-composed moments, to take a deep breath in, count to ten and know you will end up at a college you love

We look forward to discussing how our practice can best fit your needs.

Our student-centered approach…

College Composed

College Composed is here to support the student while following ethical professional standards. College Composed is responsible for helping students find schools that match their preferences; offering guidance on essays, activities and other parts of applications; communicating regularly with students and parents; and setting deadlines so students can complete work at a reasonable pace.

Students

Students are at the heart of the college application process. They are responsible for doing the work themselves; staying true to personal values and goals; being open to advice; meeting deadlines; and communicating regularly with College Composed and their recommenders, school counselors, and parents.

Parents and Guardians

Parents and guardians are here to support the student. They are responsible for allowing the student to take ownership of the process; communicating with the student and College Composed whenever concerns arise; providing school counselors with input; filling out financial aid forms; and encouraging students to get enough sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I work with educational consultants?

Here are the top 3 reasons:

  1. The college landscape changes rapidly–and is light years away from the college landscape that most parents experienced. College coaches keep up with the changes and bring this knowledge to their work with students.
  2. At many high schools, the college counselors are responsible for a large number of students, making it impossible for them to provide personalized college guidance. Because college coaches take time to know each student, they can provide college lists, essay support and work timelines tailored to the student.
  3. The college application process can be stressful not just for students but for families, and it’s often difficult for parents to work with their own kids on applications. A college coach serves as a buffer to keep your family life more calm.
When is the best time to start working with you?

Ideally, we like to begin work with students during their junior year. That said, we think it is beneficial for students to meet with us during their freshman or sophomore year (on an hourly basis) if they have questions about course selection (“Should I sign up for Spanish III?”), testing (“When should I start studying for the ACT?”), and/or activities (“How should I spend my summer?”). It’s also a great way for students and us to get to know each other before the college process begins in earnest.

Do you guarantee admission?

No. Although we’ve been pleased with our students’ success, we do not guarantee admission to any particular school. Our hope is that by creating a balanced list of “good fit” colleges for each student, students will be admitted to colleges they are happy to attend.

Do you write essays for students?

Definitely not! When it comes to college essays, only one voice matters: the student’s.  But, we guide them every step of the way, from brainstorming to final proofread.

Thank you so much for everything! That was really an EPIC amount of essays that you helped with. I know she learned a lot in the process. She realized how hard it is to write about herself and I know became more comfortable with it. I believe this will help her so much in the future with job interviews and resumes etc. I can’t thank you enough for your diligence and patience. I realize how challenging your job is to keep the student on task and remain engaged and encouraging at the same time. You are a master of this!  We could not have done it without you!

It was very, very helpful and rewarding to work with you. You brought my own ideas out and enriched them in a way that I definitely would not have been able to do by myself.  You also really taught me how to write more concisely, which is a very useful skill to have in general.
